Skip wiped a bit of powdered sugar off his shirt, spooned a bit of sweet cherries from the side of the plate and looked across the table at Teresita, and declared with full confidence,“Alright, I’m saying it. I’ve traveled, I’ve tried everything… but nothing—and I mean NOTHING—beats Tres Leches.”
Teresita folded her arms, raised one eyebrow, and grinned.“Por supuesto, Skip. You finally understand something important in life. This is cultural growth. This is maturity. This is… Pura Vida enlightenment.”
Skip leaned forward. “Back home in Florida, we get excited about brownies. Maybe a scoop of vanilla ice cream if we’re feeling wild. But you all… y’all basically invented a dessert that tastes like Christmas morning, world peace, and a hug from your abuelita—all at the same time!”
Teresita burst out laughing. “Sí, and don’t forget the part where it somehow gets better the longer it sits in the fridge. Only Costa Rican desserts age like fine wine.”
Skip nodded. “I swear, my first bite felt like the heavens opened and someone whispered, ‘Welcome home, buddy.’ And that was just the regular Tres Leches. Then Christmas came and y’all broke out the rompope version. You didn’t warn me!”
Teresita put a hand over her heart. “That’s our holiday gift to the world. We see a good dessert and think, ‘Hmm… needs more milk… and rum.’ It’s tradition!”
Skip laughed so hard he almost tipped over in his chair.“You know what, Teresita? I saw brownies at the supermarket the other day and felt… disappointed. Like they were missing a purpose.”
Teresita leaned in. “That’s because you’ve evolved. You’re practically a tico now. Soon you’ll be telling people that eating Tres Leches on Christmas isn’t optional—it’s a moral responsibility.”
Skip raised his fork like a flag. “I’ll spread the word: Brownies are for amateurs. Ice cream? Cute. But Tres Leches? That’s holiday spirit poured into a cake and blessed by the dessert gods.”
Teresita clapped her hands. “Exacto! And next week, we introduce you to Cuatro Leches. You’ll need a nap and maybe a doctor, but it will be worth it.”
Skip’s eyes widened. “Cuatro… there’s a fourth leche?”
Teresita winked. “Oh Skip… it’s Christmas. Miracles happen.”
And just like that, they dug into another slice—because in Costa Rica, especially during the holidays, sweetness isn’t just dessert… it’s a lifestyle. Pura Vida, one bite at a time.
